Our Junior School provides individualised learning programs for students between the ages of 4 and 12 years. Teachers work in collaboration with families, school-based therapists and literacy and numeracy teaching specialists to develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each student, based on the Victorian Curriculum. There is an explicit focus on the development of communication skills – both functional and social – with each student accessing the most appropriate communication supports or Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) system for them. In addition, students are supported to develop independence in areas of personal hygiene, mealtimes and taking care of personal belongings. Play-based learning continues to be an integral component of the Junior School program, to promote the development of concepts and skills necessary for learning. This is supported through the dedicated, play-based learning space, called The Imagination Station, which the students love visiting!
The layout of the school has been specifically designed to support students to feel safe and confident as they progress through the year levels – with an adjoining dedicated outdoor play space exclusively for early-years juniors to access. All classrooms have a touch-screen smartboard installed and have dedicated iPads to support students to access communication applications and to support literacy and numeracy learning activities. The students also access the other well-equipped learning spaces around the school, including an art room, an All Abilities Playground, a dedicated bike riding area, grassed oval, indoor and outdoor therapy spaces and a multi-purpose gymnasium.
All this comes together to provide a fun, safe and nurturing learning environment in which every student can thrive, learn and grow.
